Nadal Beats Djokovic And Wins The French Open
Rafael Nadal won the 13th title in Paris with his jubilee victory at the French Open. He allowed his opponent Novak Djokovic to play seven games. The Spaniard has set a record for Grand Slam titles. With the roof closed and in front of masked spectators, number one and number two in the world met on the Court Philippe Chatrier. The result, however, indicated a class difference: Djokovic did not play badly in the first round, but the serve left him in the lurch. The Serb received break after break, which meant the maximum penalty - 6-0 went to Nadal, who got into trouble a few times on his own serve, but always got big points.
The Spaniard promptly had break balls in the first game of the second set, but this time Djokovic pulled his neck out of the loop, made his serve to make it 1-0 for the first time and clenched his fist. Would the "Djoker" be able to keep up from now on?
No. Almost always the winner of the numerous high-class rallies was Nadal, the next two serves of the Serbian grabbed the almost perfect Spaniard again. Set two went 6-2 to the quirky clay court specialist from Mallorca.
After all, in the third set Djokovic managed two service games before Nadal broke his serve after a good two hours of play. The early end didn’t seem to be averted, but the Serb, who hadn’t really disappointed, managed the re-break and showed emotions again. At 5: 5, Nadal had breakball again, after Djokovic's second serve, the 34-year-old immediately indicated that he was out of bounds. The chair umpire confirmed this.
So Nadal served to win the tournament - and he kept his nerve. The match ball turned the human topspin machine with an ace to 6: 0, 6: 2 and 7: 5 after 2 hours and 41 minutes of play.
Nadal draws level with Federer
The 34-year-old remains the measure of all things at Roland Garros. Nadal has won 100 times in 102 games, losing only once to Robin Söderling (round of 16 2009) and once against Djokovic (quarter-finals 2015). His set balance in Paris is 199:27, he has won all 13 finals. Nadal won his 20th Grand Slam title in total, drawing level with record holder Roger Federer.
