Shortly before, Ronaldo had expressed his desire to leave Juventus Turin. "I spoke to Cristiano. He told me that he didn't want to stay with Juventus," said Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri. "He knows how we feel for him. If he ever wants to move, he'll know we're here," said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who described Ronaldo as "one of the greatest of all time". Initially, United's local rivals Manchester City were the favorites to sign Ronaldo. "Anything can happen in these three or four days until the end of the transfer window," said city coach Pep Guardiola. "There are only a few players and Ronaldo is one of them who decide where to play."

Kylian Mbappé apparently shortly before moving to Real Madrid

Ronaldo joined Manchester United in 2003 at the age of 18 and left the club in 2009 for the then record sum of 94 million euros for Real Madrid . He scored 450 goals in 438 competitive games for the Spanish record champions before moving to Turin in 2018. There the striker won two championships and one cup with the club. His contract with Juve would have been valid for another year, and there has been talk of a possible change this season for weeks.
