Attack On Ukraine, UEFA Withdraws Hosting Champions League Final From Russia

UEFA, the governing body of football in Europe, has withdrawn its hosting of the Champions League final from Russia due to its attack on Ukraine and will now be replaced by France.

The Russian city of St. Petersburg was assigned to host the 2022 UEFA Champions League event, but UEFA withdrew its hosting after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

An emergency meeting today decided that the final of the tournament would now be hosted by Stade de France in Paris on March 28.

UEFA said in a statement that it wanted to thank the people of France and President Emmanuel Macron for their support in agreeing to hold the final in this extraordinary crisis.

The Russian government has called UEFA's move "shameful."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was "shameful" that such a decision had been made and that St. Petersburg would provide all possible facilities for the football event. The final was to be played at Gazprom Arena, which has previously hosted the European Championships and the 2018 FIFA World Cup Final.

This is the third time in a row that the UEFA Champions League final has been relocated, having previously moved the final of the event from Istanbul to Lisbon and from Istanbul to Porto, respectively, over the past two years due to Covid-19.

Stade de France has twice before hosted the Champions League final, with Real Madrid beating Valencia for the first time in 2000 and Barcelona beating Arsenal in 2006.

The stadium in Paris has a capacity of 80,000 spectators and has hosted the 1998 FIFA World Cup final and Euro 2016 final.
