Swimming Abuse Allegations: German Swimming Association Apologizes To Victims Of Abuse
Allegations of abuse by former water jumper Jan Hempel against a coach shook swimming. The German Swimming Association now promises consequences.
After the most recent allegations of abuse in German swimming, the German Swimming Association (DSV) apologized to the alleged victims and announced the first consequences. "We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologize to all people who have ever had to experience violence, whether physical, mental or sexual, in German swimming," said the association. Deeds from the past cannot be undone. "But as those currently responsible, we are doing everything in our power to prevent such incredible acts now and in the future."

Last week, ARD showed a documentary in which former professional water jumper and vice world champion Jan Hempel made serious allegations of abuse against his ex-trainer Werner Langer. The film Abused - Sexualized Violence in German Swimming suggests that it is also up to the DSV that Hempel's story has not been processed to this day. In connection with this allegation, the DSV had suspended the water jump national coach Lutz Buschkow last week.

The 51-year-old Hempel says that he had already contacted the association's leadership in 1997 with the allegations of abuse against Langer. However, they have never dealt with the allegations in substance. Langer can no longer comment on the allegations, he died in 2001 by suicide.

Association admits problems with prevention in voluntary work
The DSV board has now requested statements from all those responsible for the association since 1997 "to find out whether there was knowledge of Jan Hempel's allegations". At the same time, the association announced that it would “resolutely” follow up on information about various cases that had been received in the past three days. Silence always protects the wrong people.
Since taking office, the current DSV board has recorded "all reports in the area of sexualised violence". The prevention of violence in the association has a "much higher priority" today than in the past decades. Since the latest allegations became known, the prevention officer Franka Weber has contacted all the people named in the ARD documentation and made them offers of help.
In voluntary work, however, prevention in sport is "difficult to manage", the DSV board admitted. He therefore called for an independent contact point that would also have to be supported with the "necessary financial resources from the public sector".
