F1 2022: The Rush Of Formula 1

Formula 1 has grown... and in what way. This is not surprising considering that the 2021 World Championship was decided on the last lap of the final race that was held at the Yas Marina circuit. Max Verstappen dethroned seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton at the last breath. Mercedes claimed its eighth Constructors' crown, but Red Bull snatched the Drivers' title. There was drama, emotion in abundance and controversy, a lot of controversy.

The championship's rectors have published the annual audience, attendance and monitoring figures for the 2021 season. And what stands out most in the first section mentioned is that the season finale in Abu Dhabi attracted 108.7 million viewers, a 29% more than the same race in 2020, and the highest viewing figures for a race during the past year.

Djokovic's Return In Dubai

Toto Wolff, head of the dominant team of the hybrid era, has compared this event (which so many people saw) with other massive events in the sport: "The 2021 season was incredible. F1 surpassed the Superbowl and was only behind the final of the Eurocup in his last race", pointed out the Austrian who saw how Mercedes got a cross in the 'very final' in Abu Dhabi.

In addition, the accumulated television audience in 2021 was 1.55 billion, 4% more than in the 2020 season. F1 also had a large audience at the season opener in Bahrain (84.5 million) and at the three events with sprint qualifying races: the British Grand Prix (79.5 million), the Italian Grand Prix (80.4 million) and the Brazilian Grand Prix (82.1 million).

As for the accumulated number of spectators throughout the year, in the Netherlands it was noted that Max Verstappen was 'on fire' (10 wins and 18 podiums in 22 appointments). There it grew by 81% in terms of audience, while in the United States (+58% year-on-year), France (+48%), Italy (+40%) and the United Kingdom (+39%) also saw large increases.

Open War For The Captaincy

Unique TV viewers (the number of people who tune in to at least one race during the season) for 2021 stood at 445 million (+3% year-on-year). The largest market for this metric was China (70.8 million unique viewers in 2021, +13% vs. 2020), but there were also significant gains in Spain (+272%), Russia (+129%) and the US. USA (+ 53%). In the case of our country, we must bear in mind that Fernando Alonso returned to F1 and that Carlos Sainz made his brilliant debut with Ferrari.

On average, F1 grands prix in 2021 enjoyed an audience of 70.3 million. This is the highest figure since 2013.

The sport that grew the most

F1 was the sporting competition that gained the most fans in 2021. Not surprising given how exciting the championship was. Growth on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Tiktok, Snapchat, Twitch and Chinese social platforms increased by 40% to 49.1 million total social media followers. Additionally, video views increased 50% to 7 billion and total engagement increased 74% to 1.5 billion.

The official F1 website (www.formula1.com), plus its application and social networks, increased its visits by 44% compared to 2020. They reached 7,040 million. Unique users increased by 63% and rose to 113 million. Therefore, F1 is outperforming other major sports in the digital realm. In this section, the share of total minutes consumed has grown from 10% in 2020 to 16% in 2021.

Greater assistance to the circuits

Here too there is a high. In 2020, many races were held behind closed doors due to the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The following year there were still problems (limited capacity of spectators in the stands), but there was already a certain normality. The total number of fans who came to see the races 'in situ' in 2021 is 2.69 million.

The Schedules Of All The F1 Grand Prix In 2022

The season before the outbreak of COVID there was a total of 4.16 million, but last year's is a good number. As we have mentioned, in many places the capacity could not be reached (as happened in the Spanish Grand Prix).

Three Grands Prix exceeded the figure of 300,000 spectators adding all the days of the weekend: USA (400,000), Mexico (371,000) and Great Britain (356,000). As a reward for this massive influx of people to the Circuit of the Americas, F1 has renewed the United States Grand Prix with Austin until 2026. And let's remember that this year it will also be run in Miami. The city of Florida debuts in the premier category with a street circuit in the vicinity of the Hard Rock Stadium.

Additionally, a total of 11 events drew crowds of over 100,000: Belgium (213,000), Netherlands (195,000), Turkey (190,000), Brazil (181,000), Abu Dhabi (153,000), Saudi Arabia (143,000), Austria (132,000).) and Hungary (130,000). This was influenced by the fact that the restrictions imposed by the situation posed by the coronavirus were relaxed.

A "special" 2021

Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of F1, has shown his satisfaction with these numbers that guarantee that the queen of motorsports competition is on the right track. "The 2021 season was something quite special. We had a battle for the championship that went until the last race with a lot of emotion throughout the course. We started to welcome our fans again, who are the heart and soul of our sport. Although our capacities were limited by the coronavirus, it was fantastic to see 2.6 million fans in the stands from all over the world", he highlighted.

And, immediately afterwards, he concluded: "We have also seen very solid figures on the broadcast and on digital platforms, which shows once again the momentum, excitement and interest that there is around F1. kick off our record 23-race season , with new cars, new regulations and new challenges for all teams and drivers, I know all our fans are excited for the start of the 2022 season."
