FIFA And UEFA Ban Russia From All Competitions

No World Cup, no Europa League - Russian football clubs and the national team are suspended until further notice. Uefa also canceled the contract with Gazprom.

The football associations Fifa and Uefa have suspended Russia from all competitions until further notice because of the attack on Ukraine. The associations announced this in a joint statement. "Football is united here and in full solidarity with all affected people in Ukraine," the statement said.

This means that the Russian national team is not allowed to take part in the World Cup playoffs in March and also not in the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year. The same applies to the women's national team at the European Championships in England in July.

Mbappé's plan to renew with PSG

The world football association Fifa decided on Sunday that Russia would no longer be allowed to host international competitions on its own territory. Home games of the national team should therefore only take place on neutral ground and without spectators. Critics saw the measures as too soft.

Several countries - led by Poland - had already announced that they no longer wanted to play matches against Russia. In addition to the planned Russian opponents in the World Cup playoffs, Poland, the Czech Republic and Sweden, the football associations of Denmark, Norway and Switzerland also announced such a step.

War Against Ukraine: Appeasement Is Over

Due to Uefa's decision, Bundesliga club RB Leipzig is now in the quarter-finals of the Europa League without a fight. The round of 16 games between Leipzig and Spartak Moscow scheduled for March will not take place.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared the way for these further measures on Monday. According to the will of the IOC, Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials should no longer be allowed to take part in international competitions. The IOC leadership made this recommendation to all world associations and organizers of sporting events.

In addition, Uefa will end its cooperation with the Russian sponsor Gazprom with immediate effect, the association announced. The decision affects all existing contracts, including the Champions League, national team competitions and Euro 2024 in Germany.
